A Tribe Called Quest biography |
|
 |
The members of A Tribe Called Quest are Kamaal Fareed also known as Q-Tip, Mallik Taylor also known as Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White.
Jarobi White left the band shortly after the first album. This group of men started their careers in 1988 in the hip-hop, alternative rap music world. They would later go on to break up the band and go their separate ways in 1999.
Ali Muhammad met Fareed and Taylor who grew up together, in high school. There name A Travel Called Quest was coined by The Jungle Brothers in 1988.
They all attended the same school. There music was considered to be a gangsta style rap with lyrics consisting of date rape and nigger. There first studio debut was in 1990 along with there first album calling it “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”.
The album created quite a collection of fans for Tribe Called Quest. The Low End Theory in 1991 was the group’s second album a huge success and appeared on the best of the year list.
A Tribe Called Quest leaned more toward jazz and the ‘70s rock as their sample base. In 1996 “Beats, Rhymes and Life”, showed some signs of wear; the album was good but not as striking as “The Low End Theory” and “Midnight Marauders”.
Tribe Called Quest is considered to be a very artistic rap group.
Adding to A Tribe Called Quest debuts are the many videos they made and preformed.
Tribe Called Quest signed with Jive Records in 1989 which has produced all the albums. Most recently they have reunited for some tours around the United States. As of May 2006, A Tribe called Quest was planning a reunion tour and is expected to release new material in the near future.
