Bun B Biography |
Bun B is a solo rap artist who is also a member of the rap group UGK. Born as Bernard Freeman and based in Houston, Texas, Bun B has been involved in music for much of his life. In 1988, when he was fifteen years old, he and his music partner Pimp C recorded their first album under the UGK name. A few years later the group would be signed by Jive Records, and in 1992 they released their first mainstream album, Banned. The duo would continue to record several other records, but the group’s popularity came in 2000, as UGK was featured in the Jay-Z hit “Big Pimpin.”
In 2002 Pimp C was arrested for gun charges and sent to prison, where he was kept in until 2005. After this Bun B went on to pursue a solo career, and he was known for constantly asking for the release of his musical partner in his songs. In 2005 he released his first and currently his only solo album, Trill. His song “Git It” was also featured on both his solo record and on the Ying Yang Twins album U.S.A. (Still United). The album reached sixth on the Billboard Hot 200 charts and topped the United States rap charts. It has also reached platinum sales status by the RIAA. After the release of Pimp C from prison, Bun B reunited with him, and the two are currently recording a new album. Tentatively called The Return of the Trill, the album is expected to be released later this year.
During his hiatus from UGK, Bun B has worked with a variety of musicians and has appeared in albums from many other people. He has especially appeared on albums from Southern-based rap musicians such as Mike Jones, Slim Thug and the Ying Yang Twins. He has also worked with Lil’ Kim and Lil Jon.
