Chingy Biography |
|
 |
The St. Louis-based rap musician Chingy (nee Howard Bailey, Jr.) is one of the newest stars in rap music and has become increasingly popular over the years. His rap career skyrocketed early on in 2003 with his debut record Jackpot. The album reached second on the Billboard charts, has sold over three million copies and featured three Top Ten singles. His first single, “Right Thurr,” reached second on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 chart. The song features many examples of the fur-fair merger in certain accents. This is where the “ur” sound replaces the “ere” sound in words. This is especially common among blacks living in the St. Louis area. Another one of the songs off the album, “One Call Away,” reached second on the Billboard chart as well.
Chingy’s follow-up album, 2004’s Powerballin’, did not chart as well as his previous work, but it has received platinum status from the RIAA regardless of that. Also in 2004, he appeared in Houston’s hit single “I Like That.” In 2006 he released his most recent album, Hoodstar. The album features the song “Pulling Me Back,” which reached the top of the Billboard rap charts. In 2006 he also appeared in two films, Scary Movie 4 and the System Within.
Early on in his career Chingy had a feud with fellow St. Louis rapper Nelly and his group, the St. Lunatics. However, he has since made up with the Nelly and his group and has also made a cameo appearance in a music video for St. Lunatic’s member Ali. Chingy also stays true to his roots in St. Louis by mentioning the city throughout much of his music.
Chingy has worked with various musicians during his short career, including rappers Tyrese, Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, singer Janet Jackson and rap group Three 6 Mafia. |
