David Banner Biography |

Although he is a relatively new face in rap music, David Banner (nee Levell Crump) has become famous for his work recent charitable work. Based out of Mississippi and named after the main character of the Incredible Hulk comic series, Banner is known best as a Southern rap artist with aggressive lyrics.
He also produces music for others, and he has worked alongside artists such as Lil Flip and Nelly.
Banner’s career started after her graduated from Southern University. He worked with the now defunct rap group Crooked Lettaz.
After the group split, he released in 2000 his first album, Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1. Soon after that Universal Records signed him to a record deal, and in 2003 he released Mississippi: The Album. The record reach ninth on the Billboard charts, and his third album, MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, was released in the same year.
The album did not sell as well, primarily because Banner had less than a month to complete the record on the behalf of Street Records Corporation, a subset of Universal that Banner still works with today.
In 2005 Banner released Certified, which was also a top ten album. However, the record created a great deal of controversy over its strong language and strong sexual content, most notably in the singles “Play” and “Touchin’.”
While some of his music has incurred a great level of controversy, Banner is still well recognized for his charitable work. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the Gulf Coast in 2005, Banner formed the Heal the Hood organization. This group works to help people who were affected by the hurricane, including provided important essential needs for victims and helping give new homes to victims. He also organized a hip-hop concert in Atlanta to benefit the victims of the storm. |
