Marshall spent his early childhood being shoved back and forth from Kansas City and Detroit. He settled on the Eastside of Detroit when he was 12. Switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends, graduate and to stay out of trouble.
At the age of 14 he began to get very serious about his rapping but it wasn't until he was 17 that he actually made a name for himself, becoming M&M, which he would later respell as "Eminem". Mathers gained some popularity at a young age with the group, Soul Intent.
His daughter, Hailie Jade Scott was born on December 25th of 1995 with long time girlfriend Kim Scott.
He released his first independent album in 1996, Infinte. In 1997 he dropped The Slim Shady EP, which brought him fame in the underground for his distinctive style.
In 1998, Dr. Dre signed Marshall to his Aftermath label after finding his demo on the garage floor of Jimmy Iovine's garage floor. The Slim Shady LP was released on Feb. 23, 1999 and hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts within weeks.
The controversy surrounding Mathers grew even larger, with the enormous popularity of his second album and his nomination for four Grammy awards including Album of the Year. Critics denounced his lyrics as being homophobic, abusive and violent towards women.
He and his manager Paul Rosenberg created Shady Records in late 2000. He signed D12 and Obie Trice to Shady Records Label. D12 is the rap group he was a member of and released their hit debut album titled Devil's Night. Eminem and Dr. Dre then signed 50 cent on a joint venture between Aftermath & Shady Records.
He made his acting debut with 8 Mile released in November 2002. A movie losely made on his life. The soundtrack to the movie was also released around that time and went 4x platinum.
Eminem has helped produce numerous albums as well, from D12 to 50 cent and his own music. And after dropping his last album Curtain Call: The Hits, there is rumour that he might retire from rapping and begin to fully embrace the role of producer and label executive.
